Is The U.S Downplaying Recession Fears? | India Development Debate

What is a recession? While some maintain that two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP constitutes a recession, that is neither the official definition nor the way economists evaluate the state of the business cycle. U.S Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, for instance, stated that even though the U.S economy is slowing down, a recession is not inevitable. Yellen added that though the risk remains, it can be avoided. Additionally, in the last 100 years, whenever the bong yield curve has inverted, the U.S economy has been hit by recession in the following 9 to 22 months. With all macro data pointing towards a looming recession, is the US government attempting to downplay the risks?
