Wall Street set for higher open after Trump cools rhetoric on China
October 13, 2025Oil futures post their sharpest single-day declines in several months, with WTI falling below $60 a barrel as the Israel-Hamas ceasefire reduces geopolitical risk premium and President Trump steps up trade tensions, threatening higher tariffs and other measures against China over China’s rare earth restrictions. “Concerns about slower global growth are renewing fears about demand,” Peter Cardillo of Spartan Capital says. “Key support levels have been breached. Despite our earlier call for a stable trading range, today’s decline could push prices into the low $50s range,” he adds. WTI settles down 4.2% at $58.90 a barrel, and Brent falls 3.8% to $62.73 a barrel. Weekly losses are 3.3% and 2.8%, respectively.
